John Northington is a seasoned energy industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience in various aspects of energy and its related fields—most recently as the founder, president, and principal owner of the Washington, D.C.-based government relations firm Northington Strategy Group.

John is a frequently cited authority on energy issues and has appeared on C-Span and Fox News to discuss various energy topics. The Hill newspaper has twice named John as one of the top ten energy consultants in Washington. John has also served on the National Petroleum Council, an oil and natural gas advisory committee to the Secretary of Energy, since 2002. During the 2004 presidential campaign, the National Journal magazine mentioned John as a possible nominee for the position of Secretary of Energy.
Prior to forming Northington Strategy Group, John worked for two federal regulatory and legislative advocacy firms, Thomas Advisors (as a partner) and National Environmental Strategies (as vice-president).
Before joining NES, John served at the Department of Interior as Senior Advisor to the Director of the Bureau of Land Management. John also served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management with energy policy responsibility for the former Minerals Management Service (now the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement) and the Bureau of Land Management.
John began his government service at the Department of Energy, where he served as White House Liaison, Chief of Staff for the Office of Fossil Energy, and Senior Advisor for Oil and Natural Gas Policy. Before joining the federal government in 1993, John was involved in commercial real estate brokerage and development and the oil and gas business in Texas.
John is a Visiting Professor with the University of Nordland Graduate School of Business’s Master of Science in Energy Management Program, which is run in cooperation with the International Institute of Energy Policy & Diplomacy at the MGIMO University in Moscow, Russia.
John, a fifth generation Texan raised in Ballinger and Midland, received a B.A. in Politics from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
